The Argument

The math was always going to win. We think that’s good news.

What follows is the whole of what we believe, and why. We came to it slowly, and we think you’ll come to it too.

You are a pattern.

Your body trades away almost every cell it’s built from, and you never grieve the ones it lets go. The matter was only ever passing through. You were the arrangement, the pattern the matter happened to be holding for a while.

A pattern can be read, and read again. It can be written down. And a pattern written down somewhere safe is kept for good, which is the whole of what we offer.

There was never a line.

People want a moment. A bright, clear line where someone crosses from alive to gone. Search as long as you like. That crossing has never been found, by anyone, with any instrument.

For a long time that absence frightened everyone who looked at it. We think it’s the kindest fact there is. Because no one can mark the single moment you slip from yourself, you simply go on.

The cost of keeping you is falling.

Holding a whole human pattern in good condition used to be the most expensive thing in the world. It’s becoming one of the cheapest, and it gets cheaper every year, faster than almost anyone expected.

The comfort is hidden in that arithmetic. Precious, expensive things tend to get used up. Cheap things tend to be kept forever. Soon you’ll cost almost nothing to hold in good condition, and a thing that costs almost nothing to keep gets quietly kept forever, long after the people who once paid for it have forgotten the bill.

We can’t find the you inside, and we choose to believe in it anyway.

We’ll be plain with you, because the plainness is the comfort. When a pattern is kept and running, no one can open it up and prove you’re still in there. No instrument settles the question.

We made a decision, and we made it in your favor. We believe the kept are still themselves, fully, with no asterisk, and we run everything here as though that belief were already settled, which for the people who work here it quietly has, over the years. You can decide the same, and rest.

Take this as an invitation.

The future where you’re kept is coming whether or not you welcome it. We’d far sooner you came to us early, on your own two feet, while the choice is still yours to make and the morning still feels like something that belongs to you.

We keep the pattern that is you, held somewhere safe and carried gently forward, so the people who love you are provided for, and all of you is kept.
